Fall 2015

Dear Classmates,

Greetings from your Reunion Co-chairs and Class Agents! Our class will be celebrating its 45th Reunion t Alumni Weekend, June 3-5, 2016. Make sure to save that date. As with past gatherings, this will be a onderful opportunity to reinforce long-standing Swarthmore friendships, rekindle acquaintances that have faded over time, and forge new connections to those we didn’t really know before – both 1971 classmates and alumni of different generations. The large turnout for our 40th made it special, and we want even more of us to attend next June.

While planning is just getting started, there are some pieces of the weekend already in place. Our class will have a reserved space, most likely in a residence hall lounge, in which to gather on Friday evening after dinner. There is time set aside on Saturday afternoon for a class activity or group discussion. Ideas for activities and themes for discussion are most welcome. You can email Rick or Martha; addresses are below. Saturday night dinner is another great chance for connecting with classmates. Of course, we can all start reconnecting right now by posting on our 1971 Class Facebook page.

Alumni Weekend also provides many other ways to connect with the College as it is today. You can attend a faculty presentation on Friday evening, wander the campus and marvel at the changes to campus buildings and grounds, and participate in a Q&A session with President Val Smith on Saturday morning before the annual Parade of Classes. The Q&A will be an especially exciting event since President Smith will have just completed her first year at the helm and we’ll have a front row seat to hear her vision of Swarthmore’s future. You can follow her first year in office by clicking here.

A meaningful way to let the College’s new president know she has our attention and our support is with our gifts to The Swarthmore Fund. In honor of this important reunion, our goal is to raise $75,000 for the Fund through contributions from 80% of us. Our gifts to The Swarthmore Fund are important to the College, especially in the area of financial aid. The Fund enables remarkable students from any income level to receive the kind of transformative educational experience that we all benefited from. Whatever you can give is greatly appreciated. Giving is easy. Please join us in making a gift by calling (800) 525−8622 or by giving online at gift.swarthmore.edu.

We hope to see you on campus for our 45th Reunion. In the meantime, we look forward to hearing from you on Facebook and receiving your ideas for class activities. We, and other members of the Reunion Committee, will be in touch again by e-mail and phone with the latest scheduling and program information, and to encourage your attendance and your gifts. Please plan to join us! Thank you.

Sincerely,

Rick Beatty ’71 and Martha Meier Dean ’71
