In the late fall of 1968, a Swarthmore College team started appearing on the General Electric College Bowl, eventually retiring as five-time champions.

During the time that this was happening, just before Christmas, 1968, the Swarthmore Afro-American Student Society (SASS) presented their demands regarding admissions for black students. The story of what happened after that is told, in part, in a Life magazine article that included the pictures below.
